PNHP, formed in 1988, proposes a publicly financed, non-profit, single payer national health program to fully cover medical care
for all Americans.
It was created by concerned physicians whose sole purpose is to provide health care for all U.S. citizens. Physicians are in the front lines witnessing long patient wait times, mandated 15-minute allocated time for each patient due to corporate mandates, less time for client discussions of lifestyle choices (prevention).
They are treating folks with no health insurance, rising medical costs and medical related bankruptcies. There has been a reduction in the number of primary care doctors (but to get a referral, many must first visit their primary doctor), and overall fragmentation of health
care with increases in visits to lowersalaried Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners etc. in various settings in which your medical records from that encounter may not be shared with your primary doctor.
The New York Medicare For All Bill (H.R. 1976), passed in the NY Assembly 5 times but has not yet passed in the Senate. When
passed, Medicare For All would be run by a single public agency, with delivery of care being in the hands of the providers you typically see. (Keep your own doctor etc).
No New Yorker would pay personal premiums, deductibles or copays. There would be a modest increase in our taxes, but this cost would be spread among 95% of our population within all economic
groups.
