President’s Message

Observing, Respecting and Growing

As we, as Unitarian Universalists, search for truth and meaning, we should recognize that being an American is both a privilege and a responsibility.

Our nation is far from perfect and continues to face serious challenges. Yet there is much to be grateful for – and much to improve
upon.

In that vein, it is educational to observe the circumstances of other countries, see their accomplishments and shortcomings and consider what that means for us. We are one of the world’s largest economies and present opportunities across technology, healthcare, entertainment, finance, manufacturing and small business. We have the world’s leading universities. We have been a world leader in civil rights, labor, as well as women, disability and LGBTQ+ movements.
However, many nations today face extreme poverty, limited healthcare, food insecurity, and restrictions on education and personal freedoms –
particularly for women and girls. They struggle with various issues related to indigenous rights.

At the same time, other progressive nations have made governments more responsive to the people and more transparent and harder for government to hide decisions from the public. One of our Latin
American neighbors, Costa Rica, for example, has invested heavily in teaching citizens about voting, democratic participation, and constitutional rights.

Our home is a nation of astounding natural beauty, outstanding cultural expressions and sports. We enjoy freedom of speech and constantly provide opportunities for success regardless of one’s background.

As we celebrate the blessings of our home, let’s continue to grow from observing and respecting the independent web of all existence of which we are a part and the lessons we can learn from the problems and successes of other democracies.
