Safe Congregations

   The following quote was published by the Unitarian Universalist Association in “The Safe Congregations Handbook / Nurturing Healthy Boundaries in our Faith Communities,” (Boston, 2005):

   “Our congregations strive to be safe and welcoming places to all. It is impossible to make a congregation 100% safe; however, there are steps that you can take to make your congregation safer while still creating a supportive space for learning, growth, and challenge as well as actively working for the inclusion and safety of all people.”

   We at the UUCRT are now heeding this advice from our UUA national leadership. In case you haven’t heard, a Safety Team of caring volunteers started working together to create a safer space for all in our congregation. 

   You can help, too! In-person meetings are held monthly following Sunday Fellowship. We welcome all ages to join! Please come share your expertise, your ideas, your concerns (and, at times, your elbow grease.)

   The idea of organizing a group to help address growing safety concerns was first brought up during a Social Action Together meeting. Many serious, pertinent questions included: “How can we prevent unwelcome intruders?” “Who amongst us might best respond should I.C.E. show up at our door?” or “Where is the first aid kit?” and “What is our plan in case of another fire? What can we do to prevent another devastation like 20 years ago this September?”

   Taking on this project seemed overwhelming. (We reviewed so many checklists!) First, we acknowledged that “it IS impossible to make a congregation 100% safe” and to prepare for EVERYthing that might happen. Then, we agreed to break it down into manageable short term and long-term goals with 3 categories. 1. How we can best prepare BEFORE an emergency. 2. How we can best respond DURING an emergency. 3. How to best provide help AFTER an event, providing options for assistance with people’s physical, mental and spiritual wellness.

   You may notice that some small steps have already been taken to help keep us all safer. (Complete first aid kits are now accessible both in the kitchen and in the sanctuary office.) Changes are discussed, strategized, and implemented. (The Worship Associates are now pointing out all EXITS during welcoming comments.) Building safety checklists have been created &completed. (All exits are now clear of boxes/chairs, must remain so.) Experts have been called. (Fire Extinguisher Training is scheduled first.) A Fire Drill may also be announced in our near future; ample notice will be given; to be scheduled for the end of service, so participation would be voluntary.

   As we approach this significant landmark of 20 years gathering together in our beautiful “new” building, let’s continue to prepare as much as possible for whatever comes our way. Let’s continue to work together, keeping our sacred space– everything and everybody in it — safe. It requires constant vigilance from at least a few at a time. When you see anything potentially dangerous, big or small, go ahead, DO and/or SAY something — It’s OK to ask for help! Let’s keep on supporting each other, speaking up and stepping up.
