President’s Message

Not a Second More in Time Than You Can Afford

MLK said that “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends” In this he refers to our acquaintances who state that they care, but do not speak out or take action to confront injustice. There is no doubt that the need for us to take that additional step is greater now than ever before. We at UUCRT have been acting as individuals, through our own networks and through our various ministries which have been delivering remarkable accomplishments. This is also the time for us to sharpen our effectiveness by fortifying our teamwork.

While our individual personalities differ, we all agree on the inherent worth and dignity of every person and together strive to recognize injustice and support as well as partner with others who confront injustice. Our Social Action Ministry exists
to lead that activity on our behalf.

Since the emergency housing of asylum seekers was established in two Newburgh hotels, congregants provided warm clothing including coats, hats, gloves, sweatshirts and socks. They purchased snacks to supplement on-site meals and on a regular basis transported fresh vegetables and fruit
from a food assistance provider.

By means of the third Sunday offering, congregants have donated funds to Jewish Voices for Peace which aims to end military, economic and political policies that obliterate Palestine; World Central Kitchen which delivers meals to people affected by various disasters; UUA Relief Fund which
gave funding to our fellowship after the fire that destroyed our building.

During the 2024 election cycle congregants contributed time, energy and resources to Getting Out the Vote by writing 1300+postcards.

The Social Action Ministry of the Poughkeepsie UU is keen to collaborate with us to multiply our combined effectiveness. Our UUA headquarters is offering support through a Social Justice Empowerment workshop, and handbook, and the sharing of best practices. The UUCRT board of Trustees is
keen to respond positively to any proposals from this ministry.

What social actions would you like to see us take? This ministry needs 2 additional members and with all the passion you can give and not a second more in time than you can afford.

If you are interested, please email aa.uucrt@gmail.com before May 7 and simply state – I’m interested in joining the Social Action team. Then we will get back to you.

Thank you,
-Markly Wilson
